The Archaen Empire. Formally referred to as - The August Empire of Archaen, which will commonly appear on Imperial Seals, official communiqués, currency and all forms and manner of Imperial property. Shorten versions will commonly appear in an unofficial context, such as - The August Empire, or even simply - The Empire. [Conspiratory names also come in the form of The White Empire, and even The Wight Empire, by enemies of the state and subversives, both rare and small in number, commonly use these. ]
Overview
The Archaen Empire has existed for the past two thousand years in the Halo and Arzone Nebulas and the vast regions of space in-between. The Empire was built on the foundation of the now extinct race simply know as the Titans. The Titans were responsible for terraforming many of the worlds of the Empire (oddly enough for human use). Today, a few scattered remains, ruins and artifacts of Titan civilization exist, giving us very few clues as to who the Titans were, and even more, what brought about their eventual extinction.
As a society, the Archaen Empire is made up of four distinct members of society: Humans -the majority, Wights, Wight-Spectors, and Dreamers. Proper social interaction in the Empire is dependent upon knowledge of the correct protocols when dealing with different members of Archaen society.
HUMANS - (Population: 1 trillion) Humans make up the vast majority of Archaen civilization.
WIGHTS - (Population: 10 billion) The Wights are a race of small, moth size, opal colored, symbiotic amoebas. Alone they are utterly helpless, seeming to spend their existence fluttering on air currents or clinging to surfaces. Together, through their mass collective, they have the ability to warp probability fields - breaking the laws of physics. Faster than light travel has not been achieved by the Archaen race due to the limits of the laws of physics. However, with the Wights warping a probability field within the vicinity of a FTL engine, the light barrier can be broken, allowing for Post-Light Speed. There seems to be no limitations as to how fast the Wights can take the ship, however, the ship's superstructure seems to be the only deciding factor. Wights have been used in other areas of technology and manufacturing, but as a whole the Wights are a solitary race onto themselves, interacting with the rest of society through their symbiotic host, the Wight-Spectors.
WIGHT-SPECTORS - (Population: 1.5 million) A Wight-Spector is the symbiotic union between a Wight and a living entity. This is not a symmetrical union. In nearly every case, the Wight is the dominant form (like a 60/40 relationship), however in the bonding, the Wight is forever changed, because eventually it will absorb the strongest personal traits of its host. In time a unique individual emerges, but still in touch with its primary purpose in life - to protect and serve the Wight species. In their symbiotic forms Wight-Spectors are able to communicate with the Wight Mind Collective, but not create warping fields with them. A Wight-Spector may generate a small warping field within the boundaries of their host body. By doing so a host body may perform incredible feats of strength, speed and endurance, but not intelligence. One Spector was recorded bench-pressing 1,000 pounds - 50 times, and unofficial accounts have recorded more.
The risk of warping probability fields is in blowing out muscle tissue, tendons and bone of the host. Great care is given as to how far a Wight will push its host body. Wights bond with their host through the eye. This is done for several reasons: 1) the tissues of the eye are made with some of the same tissues of the brain. The eye is actually a light sensitive out growth of the brain, and 2) the pathway through the optic nerve is one of the most direct routes to the brain. This bounding practice can be described as excruciatingly painful, but only for a short moment of time. As soon as the bonding begins, the Wight has worked to change the host brain chemistry, gaining control of its nervous and muscle systems. When boned the Wight's body will appear as a cataract like smear on the host eye, or protected in a pair of glasses, or Wight-spectacles with the Wight suspended in a lens (usually the left). Upon careful examination one can see connective nerve-webs emanating from Wight into the host eye.
DREAMERS - (Population: 10 Million) Dreamers are individuals with enhanced thinking and mental abilities, such to the point that their thought process - the ability to link ideas and memories in a non-hierarchical, non-linear process (MINDRACING) are 20%-90% faster then a normal human being. This enhanced thinking gives them the ability to access the Mindplane, a mass consciousness shared by all living beings upon which a Dreamer may impose a desired reality - a Dream. The strength of the Dream, the concreteness of the reality, is dependent upon the skills, willpower and creative imagination of the Dreamer. Many Dreamers pursue and excel in this art. Once established, an infinite number of minds may enter the Mindplane for as long as they wish (dependent upon the physical and mental endurance of the Dreamer).
The time stream of the Mindplane is different from our own. Roughly a ratio of 1:10 exists - that is, one year equals ten on the Mindplane. This ratio makes the Mindplane ideally suited for education (yes there is a Dream University), business, vocation, medical and military training, pleasure and recreational pursuits as well. However, not everyone can enter the Mindplane. One must be initiated to it. This is a form of conditioning involving disciplined meditation and hypnosis techniques, which may or may not work for everyone. Some have equated this experience to a self-induced coma, or near death, out-of-body experience.
For many, the first time is the hardest because it is the separation of the mind from the body. Damage or injury inflicted to those on the Mindplane is reflected on their physical bodies (as wells as exercise and fitness training). Because of this, the Dreamer's state of existence must be stable. Nightmares, emotional and obsessive thoughts and feelings can manifest themselves on the Mindplane, killing or driving others insane. For this reason, Dreamers are shielded and shield themselves from emotional contact. Emotional trauma to even feelings of love can destroy a Dreamer’s discipline and skill. Because of their disdain for emotion thought, Dreamers tend to seclude themselves from most public social interactions. To some, this would give them a cold and uncaring mannerism, however, nothing could be further from the truth.
Only a True Dreamer has given up their human condition and cut all emotional ties by purging nearly all emotional bearing chemicals from their minds. Dreamers (True Dreamers in training) still have an emotional capacity, though under strict control and skillfully repressed. They do not see the need for love (which they classify as a mild form of insanity) and other forms of obsessive thought, but do see the need for companionship and pleasure, which for them is a form of relaxation needed to attain other forms of consciousness and thought. Many Dreamers, and True Dreamers are married and have families. However, above all else, Dreamers crave information and knowledge, which is their true passion in life. Many of the relationships Dreamers have are based on the fact that they find a person interesting and unique. In social settings, Dreamers prefer to be spoken to in the formalist of manners, a form of casual interaction will come later as a Dreamer gets to know an individual, but failure on a persons part to interact with a Dreamer in this manner will be taken as rude and disrespectful. Dreamers do not mince words often, or worry about hurting others feelings.
ASSASSIN-GUARDIANS - (Population: 15 million) 'Sin-Guardians for short, are the elite warriors of the Empire. They are individuals who have gone through intense training programs for 100 Mindplane years (ten in real time) in the areas of combat training - armed and unarmed, survivalist skills, battle tactics, piloting and tactical craft dog-fighting skills, espionage, terrorism, anti-terrorism, criminology, psychology and medicine. The 'Sin-Guardian training program is the most intensive training ground known to the Empire. As such only about .5%-8% of all applicants complete and graduate from the academies. Those that do not, feel no dishonor, for there are several high ranking military and security positions available for those with some 'Sin-Guardian training. A 'Sin-Guardian’s duty is the safety and protection of those they serve. To this duty they have sworn their life and loyalty. The 'Sin-Guardian Order is a traditional one, and as such it is not unheard of to find family members following in the footsteps of others, however the longevity of a 'Sin-Guardian's life depends on whose service they have sworn to, and the nature of that service.
The best way to treat a 'Sin-Guardian is with respect and caution. Avoid sudden moves or bold gestures in their vicinity as it may trigger a reaction or a Killing Reflex, which in many cases they have little to no control over. The highest level of 'Sin-Guardianship are those of the Imperial level. Of the .5%-8% who graduate about 20% qualify as Imperial Level 'Sin-Guardians. The rest are considered Archaen Level. Though 'Sin-Guardians treat each other with mutual respect and honor, there is an unspoken rivalry between Imperial and Archaen rankings as 'Sin-Guardians love nothing more than personal combat, glory and to conquer a supposed superior enemy.
Planets and Systems - Many of the worlds of the Empire have been thoroughly mapped through satellite scans and Helo surveys.
Planet designations - 1st Worlds are those that have completely been populated and settled. 2nd Worlds are planets that have numerous colonies with scattered rural regions and at least 1-5 major urban centers. 3rd Worlds are uninhabited, but may be in the processed of being surveyed for colonies, or may be in the advance stages of terraforming. The climate and geography of the worlds greatly varies from planet to planet and is one of the major factors in determining a planets 1st, 2nd or 3rd world stasis. The August Worlds are as follows:

It is home to over four million Archaens - Humans, Dreamers, Wights, and Wight-Spectors. It is also the location of Dream City, The Archaen Merchant fleet and Fort Essence.

Military: Defensive Force - The Defensive Force is the military arm of an empire consisting of a well equipped fleet dedicated to the defense of their empire’s borders and territories. As such they are trained to fight and operate within their borders and native reality properties. There may be sub-divisions of forces, for example, units responsible for the protection of individual planets, trade routes, stations, star-systems, or the empire’s outer borders.
A Defensive Force can be quite an intimidating and formidable presence to deal with. They have the ‘Home Field’ advantage and are intimately familiar with their territory (stellar and terrestrial). As such, many nasty and unexpected surprises could be in store for any unprepared invader daring (or stupid) enough to enter into their territory.
However, a Defensive Force is like a chain. It is only as strong as its weakest link. The ratio of territory to defend versus the number of units available becomes a crucial factor in the security of ones empire. There will always be gaps in a Defensive Forces lines, and if one attempts to make a solid wall of fleet ships around their empire, there could even be more dire consequences to pay.
Chronic Problems: The Archaen Empire neighbors a Rogue Pirate Empire know as the Hunn Venture. Having survived an invasion by the Hunns half a millennium ago, the resulting war lead to the development and implementation of the Archaen's Mag-shield technology, FTL engine drives, Warsaws blades and Torpedo Blasters.
Within the Empire there are a number of subversive elements such as the Red Klan, a xenophobic hate group bent of the down fall of the Archaen Monarchy.
