Hyper-space is a dimension just off from our own. Once entering it a ship is capable of
traveling several times greater then the speed of light. While the FTL drives will get ships
in the Greater Galaxy from system to system in a relative quick time it would still take
years to cross the galaxy. While in Hyper-space a ship can cross the galaxy in weeks or
even days.
The only problem with Hyper-space is called the Drift. The ‘winds’ that exist in Hyper-space
can push a ship off it’s intended course. So a vessel has to leave Hyper-space every so often
to re-align it self back on the proper course. The Watchers are the only ones that don’t seem to
need to do this as they can take an entire fleet from once side of the galaxy to the other without
ever having to leave Hyper-space to re-align.
Ships that try and enter Hyper-space with a gate not built by the Watchers run the risk of
releasing these 'winds' into this universe. These 'winds' are then called Phase Storms. These
storms can range in size from a small bit of turbulence to world destroyers.
Also a ship traveling at FTL speeds exceeding a Gate Factor of 8.5 or higher has the potential of
creating an unstable Hyper-Gate. A body moving while creating a Hyper-Gate implodes upon
itself in the creation of a flux worm hole.
Entering Hyper-Space can only be done at a Gate. Only the Watchers have the tech or ability
to open a gate into Hyper-Space anywhere they choose. Once in Hyper-Space a ship can leave
it anywhere in the universe it chooses. There is no need for a gate to exit, the ship just needs
to come to a stop and Hyper-Space ‘ejects’ them into normal space. Ships can still leave
Hyper-Space through gates, though, in doing so they do not have to slow down.
Stars, planets, moons and any large object that exerts a force of gravity creates a shadow in
Hyper-Space. While in Hyper-Space a craft can pass right through these shadows. But
Hyper-gates can not be opened at the site of gravity wells as it creates a back flow affect that will
destroy the ship.
What a Hyper-Gate looks like:
Hyper-Gates are long vent like spires that contain a nodule at the end in a crescent shape
counter to the spire. They are held together in a diamond pattern with gravity snares that can be
extended or retracted depending on the size of the ship going through the gate. The long spires
contain lights that light up when the gate is being activated. They will follow the path of
direction of the ship. In other words, a ship entering Hyper-Space the lights will blink towards
the nodules at the back, a ship exiting the lights will blink away from the nodule. This helps
prevent ships from colliding at the gates.
Through unknown means the Hyper-Gates exist in both normal space and Hyper-space. In
both spaces a beacon calls out it’s location. This does not help with ‘Drift’ and can only
assist in the location of gates.
